UK retailer Game is reportedly cutting an unspecified number of jobs.
Speaking to Eurogamer, multiple employees said workers had been told to expect redundancies as the company moves most non-managers to zero-hours contracts.
These are casual contracts where employers aren’t required to offer work to staff and workers aren’t required to accept it if it is offered.
Those set to be impacted by layoffs were reportedly told they would be contacted separately.
VGC has contacted Frasers Group, which acquired Game for £52 million in 2019, for comment on this report.
Game’s UK retail businesses are spread over 320 standalone stores and concessions within Sports Direct and House of Fraser, according to the company.
In January, Game confirmed plans to end its long-running pre-owned video game business.
“As part of the integration of Game, we will be phasing out the trade-in, pre-owned and Game Elite offerings in the UK over the coming months,” a spokesperson in exchange for Frasers Group told the BBC.
“Pre-owned will still be available in our standalone stores across the UK while stock lasts, and Game Elite will still be available until the end of summer.”

Man, it sucks to see that Game is making layoffs. Moving most staff to zero-hours contracts is a rough deal. It’s like they’re negative valuing their employees at all. Hopefully those affected can find better opportunities elsewhere in the gaming industry. Companies need to start treating their workers better, especially in such a competitive market.
