Sony has acknowledged that backwards compatibility was a unique and much-welcomed feature before it was dropped in the PS4 generation. It has long been assumed that a shift in console architectures is the reason Sony didn’t bring the feature to PS4, but an infamous remark made by former executive Jim Ryan back in 2015 suggested that Sony didn’t see any value in backwards compatibility.

It’s wild to think about how much backwards compatibility was a big deal before the PS4 came out. I mean, who wouldn’t want to dive back into their favorite PS3 games on a new console? The whole architecture shift makes sense, but it feels like Sony kinda dropped the ball on this one. I remember Jim Ryan’s comment about it not being a feature people cared about, and honestly, that just baffled me. So many of us wanted to revisit those classics, and it felt like they were just brushing it off. Now, with the PS5, it seems like they’re finally realizing how much we value our gaming history. Better late than never, I guess!
